Teaming in ASL is a common requirement. A team of CHIs or a CDI/CHI team may be required to effectively communicate with your clients.
Both can be scheduled though the Jeenie app with 7-14 days notice.
What are the types of ASL Interpreters:
Certified Hearing Interpreters (CHI) are commonly referred to as ASL Interpreters and are readily available for you, both on-demand and through pre-scheduled calls.
Certified Deaf Interpreters (CDI) are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, native users of ASL. They work in tandem with CHIs to provide the most comprehensive interpretation for clients with a limited understanding of standard ASL.
Below are some guidelines to help you choose the appropriate accommodations for your unique situation.
When you will need a team:
Certified Hearing Interpreter (CHI):
- Lengthy appointments: 1.5 hours, or more, of interpretation
- Appointments with multiple breaks, or “down time,” are a consideration and can eliminate the need for a team of 2 CHIs.
- Legal discussions: 1 hour, or more, of interpretation
- Deposition, and/or courtroom requires a team for any length of time.
- Educational: Post-secondary classroom lectures and labs
- Webinars: Recorded webinars requiring 1 hour, or more, require a team
- Large groups: Panels, group discussions, large staff meetings, and workshops
- Two interpreters are required for any length of time.
- Mental health: Behavioral health evaluations require a team for any length of time.
Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI):
- Immigration: When the Deaf/Hard of Hearing client is not fluent in ASL, a CDI/DI paired with a CHI (Certified Hearing Interpreter) is required.
- Mental health: Deaf client communication needs vary. Behavioral health evaluations may require a CDI/CHI team.
- Upon request of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing client or their proxy.
